The Association of Finnish Municipalities awarded Joensuu the Climate Municipality of 2021 prize. The honorary award and a prize worth 3000 euros were granted during the virtual Municipal Climate Conference in June 2021.

With this award, the Association of Finnish Municipalities wants to reward a municipality committed to active climate action. Joensuu was awarded for the city’s energetic, innovative and inclusive climate action. The motto of Joensuu’s climate work is in fact, that you don’t have to do everything alone – together we can achieve climate neutrality.

The climate communication of the city is active, visible and accessible. On our website we share information about our goals and measures towards carbon neutrality, as well as tips to local citizens and companies on everyday climate actions.

– Our goal is to become carbon neutral by 2025. The goal was set already in our climate programme in 2014. We have achieved concrete results and want to encourage local citizens and businesses to get involved too, says Kari Karjalainen, the Mayor of Joensuu.

The prize money will be deposited in the climate account of Joensuu and will be used to finance local emission compensation projects, e.g. increasing local carbon sinks by reforestation.
