Weather warning for pedestrians and cyclists via text message

The city of Joensuu has launched a text message service to warn subscribers about slippery pavements and cycle lanes in order to reduce injuries caused by a fall.

The warning is triggered by the on-duty winter maintenance coordinator, as he sends off the maintenance staff to grit. The message can also be triggered on the basis of forecasts, if the coordinator judges that conditions for pedestrians and cyclists are very likely to turn poor.

To subscribe to the alerts,

  1. send a text message to 16130 from the phone on which you would like to receive the warnings.
  2. Type in varoitus joensuu
  3. and add either heti (for an immediate alert), 6, 7 or 8, depending on when you would like to receive the warning

If, for instance, you would like to get an alert at 7 am about slippery conditions that have set in overnight, send the message varoitus joensuu 7.

The service is free of charge for the subscriber. For more details go to www.liukastumisvaroitus.fi.
